There's some kind of safe there.
Okay.
- Well, the reason I don't have a car is the amount of money I receive from Social Security is just enough for food and rent and a few necessities.
We have an income $260 a month for two people.
And I did learn to drive when I was about 17.
But I've never been in a position where I made enough money to afford a car.
My only means of transportation is a cab, so I'm limited.
I can only go to the grocery store twice a month.
I try to keep it within $2 each way $4 dollars a trip.
So this results in, what?
- A very limited lifestyle.
Lack of communication with the other human beings in social settings.
Going to clubs I belong to open doors for the handicapped.
And we meet at the Holiday Inn on Lebanon Church Road.
That's approximately five miles from my home each way.
To get there, it costs $3.50 each way in cab fare, $7 just to attend the meeting.
Today we'll have to go to Penn Ave first to go to the food stamps, and then we'll have to go from there over Point Park College to register.
Well, I have to call the yellow cab.
I have to remember the place that have that lady call a cab for me in the food stamps because I can't reach the telephone down the lobby.
And then after Point Park, I'll take it to see Santa Claus, if you like that.
It's going to cost us about $18 today to get done with all the trips before we go back home by cab.
We'll have to spend the $6 going down and the $3 over to the college, and then $3 to Kaufman's and our $6 back.
1 in 10 people in America are handicapped, and with a growing elderly population who face the same problems as the younger, physically handicapped in getting on busses and taking cabs.
I think we have to do something very shortly for these people because we're keeping them in their homes out of work, out of schools for the younger, keeping the elderly in their home away from going to the doctor.
Many times they can't afford to go because of transportation.
We need some type of program where the handicapped can get either on public transportation.
There are busses built in Germany that are designed for the handicapped to get on, and we have never purchased those in this country in any American city.
A short of that, perhaps subsidizing with some kind of food, like food stamps, sometimes that transportation stamps where the handicapped person would pay so much of their income and receive a greater number of stamps, which they could use on the transportation system of their choice.
If they couldn't ride the bus, they could at least take the cab more often.
Fortunately, for the last two years, I have been able to attend the community college because of BBR, the State Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation did pay the cab fare, which was ten a day, but I have only two years to go before my B.A.
degree, and I have to transfer to another college.
And I've been accepted downtown at Point Park, but the cab fare will run $12 round trip, $6 each way, and they are saying they cant pay it.
I don't believe that we intended to state that we could not pay.
We were investigating alternate modes of transportation and methods of solving the transportation problem.
And, at this time, we we have completed our investigation and find that, that we will be able to provide the transportation by using the magic carpet, - The magic carpet van service?
Yes the magic carpet Yes.
Van service at state expense.
So that problem has been resolved.
So her, transportation to and from college each day will be picked up by the state?
Yes, yes it will.
