Personally, I love children.
There's something about them.
Because I always look at them and I see tomorrow, and I see a child because they are the future.
But if I can do some small thing to bring just one of them out, well I'll be doing something that I feel is important to society.
And certainly if God blesses me with health, which he has, I can continue on in this one.
I ask for nothing more.
Denzel Williams is a foster grandparent.
So is Adelaide Hill, and so are 108 other people in Allegheny County.
They spend 20 hours a week with their foster grandchildren, all disabled in some way, doing what comes naturally to them as grandparents.
They play with the kids, teach them skills and help them become self-sufficient.
For this, the grandparents got about $35 a week from the Federal Action Program to supplement their Social Security, but the rewards go much deeper than money.
Yeah, I remember... The first day that Danny took two steps alone.
I thought I struck gold.
I was telling everyone until they got so tired of hearing it.
Because you can't imagine a child that didn't walk alone that takes two steps alone.
That's quite an accomplishment.
My children were grown and I felt they didn't need me and I wasn't helping a soul.
You feel kind of useless if you're not helping someone.
And I heard of this program and I thought maybe I could help a little bit.
You know, it sounds corny, but it's the truth.
The Foster Grandparent program is for people who have some spare time on their hands.
According to project director Shirley Arch, anyone can apply if they're at least 60 years old in good health on a limited income, able to read and write, and are concerned about children.
Applications are available by calling 323-1445, 323-1445.
The only qualifications I think, in a thing like this is love, patience and respect for them.
And when you see them respond to that, I'm telling you that is real reward.
Real reward.
For at least one foster grandparent, there is a fringe benefit.
I am a, or was I should say a widower.
And during this program I met, a very precious person, and it ended in a marriage.
So they used to say that life begins at 40.
Don't believe it.
Let's raise it to 60.
At least 60.
