Penny candy wasn't really penny candy years ago.
It was two for a penny or three for a penny.
Remember?
It was rock hard or sticky or gooey or it melted in your mouth.
And of course, was every color and flavor imaginable.
We wondered what it would be like if we collected a few bottles and went to the local neighborhood store for a bag of penny candy.
And, I got some bottles and I'm going to buy some penny candy.
How much?
$0.25.
$0.25?
Fantastic.
Let's get started.
You got a lot of good stuff.
Okay, Miss Cunningham, I'll have, How much are those dollars?
Those dollar candy?
A penny a piece.
I'll have four of those.
Four of those.
That's $0.04.
And, a peppermint stick a nickel.
Okay, that gives me $0.09.
How about the Mary Janes?
Two cents?
They used to be a penny.
You used to know you used to get three of those for a penny.
I think.
Okay, I'll take give me two of those.
Two of those.
Are those, Twizzlers that you have there.
$0.02 a piece.
Give me three of those.
I really like those.
three?
Yeah, I'll take three of those.
And what are those bullets there?
What's.
What's in those?
That's something new.
That's a nickel.
Okay, I lost count, but I'll take one of those too.
Okay.
You're at.... I got four more cents.
Okay.
You have any bubble gums down there anywhere?
It's $0.02 a piece for bubble gum.
Wow.
Inflation hit everything.
That'll take it up.
I'll take two bubble gums.
Okay.
Okay, Mrs.
Cunningham, we've got $0.25 worth of penny candy here.
You know, I remember when I was a kid, you would have $0.25 you get a bag full.
But now it seems that everything is cost a penny.
You don't get any three four two four any of that anymore.
Theres very few penny candies.
Very few.
In other words, penny candy isn't penny candy anymore.
Thats for sure.
What are you.
What do you think inflation is?
The cost of sugar and the whole bit.
I assume that penny candy will still be as popular, but it's just that it's harder to make it in the cost of manufacture.
Thats when they stop the penny candy when the sugar got so high it went up from a penny to two pennies, and then it went from nickel to a dime, all the nickel candies are a dime now, all the dime candy is $0.15.
So that's, that's the size of it This is the first time I've done this in about, I guess, ten years or so, but.
Put In my bottle for 25 cent.
Well, thank you very much Mrs.
Cunningham.
- Youre welcome.
Well, all you nostalgia buffs.
That's what you now get for $0.25 worth of 16 ounce and quart pop bottles.
But we'll tell you one thing.
Even though we didn't get as much and it's harder to find a bag of penny candy can still put you on top of the world.
And what the heck, we still have our memories, don't we?
