National Governors Association meets in Atlantic City
First Lady Jill Biden and dozens of the nation’s governors are in Atlantic City for the annual summer meeting of the National Governors Association, the first time the event is being held in New Jersey in more than 30 years. On Thursday, the second day of the two-day conference, Gov. Phil Murphy led a session on the youth mental health crisis, and laid out a strategy to tackle it.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipFirst lady Jill Biden and dozens of the Nation's Governors are in Atlantic City with Governor Phil Murphy at the helm for the annual National Governors Association conference it's the first time the event is being held in New Jersey in more than 30 years as chairman of the association Murphy today unveiled his new plan to address the youth Mental Health crisis A playbook that includes four key areas like access to Affordable Health Care stronger prevention training for caregivers and reducing stigma the governor today also signing legislation that will help Public Schools pay for expanded Behavioral Health Care it comes as the U.S Surgeon General has issued a warning about the rise of mental health issues among our youth Governor Murphy today urged his colleagues to get on board calling it an issue that transcends party lines senior political correspondent David Cruz was there welcome to the iconic Atlantic City New Jersey for the national governors association annual meeting I am honored to call this meeting to order technically day two of the national Governors Association Summer Conference Governor Murphy is serving as host and took the lead on the morning's first session during which he unveiled a youth mental health initiative The Playbook has been developed over the past year through a series of Roundtable events held across the country where we brought together close to 500 parents young people Educators medical and mental health professionals policy makers Community leaders and other experts in the mental health field the play The Playbook unpacks the four pillars that guided our chairs initiative addressing prevention and resilience building increasing awareness and reducing stigma ensuring access and affordability of quality treatment and care and finally training and supporting caregivers and teachers we could meet experts in all those locations including importantly folks with lived experience and to your very good question we come up with a Playbook that we delivered this morning I hope it has enormous legs it's it's practical it's four pillars 13 sort of sub-pillars and then 35 very specific points Tammy's got a similar playbook for infinite maternal Health again a similar cascading and the in each of those cases runs everything from low-hanging fruit doesn't cost you anything all the way to stuff that costs you money last comment I would have is this I mentioned this earlier in either of those in neither of these cases is it doctoral calculus we know what works we know we know that we've got a crisis with mental health among our youth but we also know what we need what works to fix that or address it similarly with infinite maternal so I help what has legs David um and I believe it will later in the day luncheon keynote speaker first lady Jill Biden urged support for biodynamics including investments in professional training for community colleges and for four-year colleges and universities so that students could train for High-Tech jobs so the Biden education pathway starts with free high quality universe reversal preschool because that's where it's at I don't care we got to get those kids educated early off to a good start and it ends with uh you know a high school experience that prepares students for you know for their next steps so it provides for two years of affordable Community College and opens up an Avenue to a four-year degree if that's what you want there was a time when this event was seen as a national platform for a potential presidential run by Murphy but nowadays Murphy's a Biden man his term as chair of the governor's Association ends tomorrow when he turns over the gavel to Utah governor Republican Spencer Cox we'll talk to them tomorrow when this conference concludes in Atlantic City I'm David Cruz NJ Spotlight News
