(gentle upbeat music) - If you look at in the Bible, the Book of Genesis, it talks about two brothers, Cain and Abel.
And one brother murdering the other brother.
And when questioned about his behavior and why he did that to his brother, he asked a question: "Am I my brother's keeper?"
(gentle upbeat music continues) So the grant that I'm currently working is the Family and Community Engagement piece.
This was recently added to the district.
It gives the district a opportunity to connect more outside of the four walls of the district with the community, community partners, and also to partner with the families so that we can make sure and ensure our young men are getting the supports that they need.
(woman laughing) - Nice.
- We will have our second family literacy program.
This one is called "The Bear Snores On."
So there will be a reading of that book.
We'll watch a video.
And then after the video is done, we're gonna break out into is some arts and crafts.
And that's designed to get our students and the families all working together to complete the tasks that are put forth.
(gentle music) We found that, especially in communities of color, that the pandemic only exacerbated existing issues.
It brought things to light that were being basically overlooked: food insecurity, mental health struggles, and things of that nature.
And so, it's very important that our young people have these supports as they return back to in-person learning.
- Pipe cleaners.
- A year and a half, you know, we've had young people at home.
And, you know, for those young people, especially in communities of color, there wasn't a lot of support in the household.
We also know that, you know, the pandemic also widened the learning gap.
If we can make leaps and strides here at the district, but then the child goes back home and there isn't anything to support everything that they've learned, it's just like basically pouring water into a cup that has holes in it.
So if we can plug up the holes in the cup, then we know that as we pour into our young people, that they'll be retaining the information and the instructions that we're giving them.
(energetic music)
