Augusto Acabou, one of two Newark firefighters killed responding to a ship fire in Port Newark last week, was laid to rest Thursday. His funeral at the Cathedral Basicila of the Sacred Heart in Newark's North Ward was attended by hundreds, including family members, dignitaries, firefighters and other first responders.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwhile in Governor Murphy will step away from the conference this evening to attend the wake of firefighter Wayne Brooks Jr who along with one of his fellow firemen died last week while battling the massive cargo ship blaze in Port Newark funeral services were held this morning for his colleague Augusto Acabou a hero's goodbye for someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice senior correspondent Joanna gagas reports today the family friends and fellow Newark firefighters of Augusto Acabou Acabou said their final goodbyes to a man who died fighting the massive cargo ship fire in Newark last Wednesday my brother I love you man I'm gonna miss you tremendously to say Augusto Acabou was Brave as an understatement to say he was a hero still fall short of what I saw that evening this man that we lay to rest here today was one of the very best amongst us akabu was one of two firefighters who died fighting The Blaze his funeral services were held in the breathtaking Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark complete with all the Pomp and Circumstance befitting a fallen firemen those closest to him spoke of Augie as a hero not just in uniform but someone who was there for others Wherever Whenever they needed him folks like his high school football coach who described Augusto's support as he battled cancer goes to the restaurant he gives me maybe three days of food he said sat at the house with me and he talked and he talked just to make me feel good I mean that's the type of guy he was he called me probably every day forget yourself long enough to lend a helping hand this scripture was awesome I heard one person say when my daughter was young and her dad didn't do right there was all of you and a man whose good nature and humor was undeniable well you did it all played football San Francisco 49er fan played softball played baseball even boxed he actually quit boxing because he felt bad for the guys he hurt man he was funny he always made us laugh no matter what what movie was in Augie came and he would uh impersonate people and if you didn't get a chance to meet him I'm I I feel bad for you because man that dude was a joy he definitely was a joy to be around but the tears flowed when Newark fire chief Rufus Jackson presented akabu's helmet to his family at newark's public safety director posthumously promoted akabu to captain of the Newark fire department Augie paid the ultimate sacrifice that is why we felt it most appropriate to posthumous extend a ceremony promotion to firefighter agabu horrible emotion to the rank of your captive We Salute Captain Augusto Acabou before they ran the final Bell in honor of the nine years of service and the ultimate sacrifice Augie akabu paid for his community foreign the final Bell for this Fallen firefighter in Newark I'm Joanna Gagis NJ Spotlight News
