The owners of the dealership at that time commissioned with Eustace Ziegler to paint several paintings.
This one in particular hung in the dealership all the years that I worked there.
For my 45th anniversary, the company gave me this picture.
This was always an inspiration to me because this guy is doing a hard thing.
He's trekking around Alaska in the winter with his mule.
APPRAISER: So the artist as you mentioned mentioned is Eustace Ziegler.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied fine arts there and was from a family that were Episcopal missionaries so when he came to Alaska in 1909, it was not for painting, it was to manage the Episcopal Mission "The Red Dragon."
And he did uh come to Alaska with the idea that he wanted to bring his religion to the Alaskan natives here.
He got here and I think probably fell in love with what he saw in the landscape and the Alaskan frontier and so he started painting and has gone on to become one of the most famous painters uh that painted and depicted Alaska in almost many of his works.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: Eventually he left Alaska in 1924 and went back to Seattle and he passed in 1969.
So this is an oil on board.
We have the the signature and the date in the lower left here and he did paint it in 1963.
You did mention that the title of this painting is "Fifty Winters."
I think your description of this man walking through the snowy landscape and that that really can be difficult and I think the title of Fifty Winters gives us the idea that he did this over and over again.
The condition of it is excellent.
I think the fact that it's oil on board has really kept it stable.
There's quite a range for his work um, this is a very large example and a lovely example of his work.
If we were estimating this painting for auction today, I would suggest an auction estimate of 30 to 50,000.
